Spórt sa Choláiste

Cuireann Coláiste Feirste an-bhéim ar an spórt agus ar an chorpoideachas.  Tapaímid deiseanna forbartha pearsanta fríd na ranganna corpoideachais le linn am scoile, agus fríd chlár spórt agus clubanna i ndiaidh am scoile, mar shampla fríd Scoileanna Sínte.

Tá Corpoideachas ina ábhar riachtanach sa scoil. Is féidir Corpoideachas a roghnú fosta mar ábhar TGMO ina ndéanann na daltaí staidéar ar stíleanna maireachtála cothroma agus an tsláinte aonair, idir fhisiceach, mheabhrach agus shóisialta. Ag iar16 is féidir BTEC Spórt a bhaint amach.  Ansin téann daltaí ar aghaidh chun na hollscoile le céim sa Spórt a dhéanamh.

Tá a lán imeachtaí seach-churaclaim ar fail d’achan dalta i ndiaidh am scoile ar Choláiste Feirste. Tá foirne againn ag achan aois ghrúpa do Pheil ghaelach, Iománaíocht, Peil na mBan, Camógaíocht agus Sacar. Cuirimid Liathróid Láimhe agus Lúthchleasaíocht ar fail d’achan dalta chomh maith. Bíonn traenáil ann achan lá sa seachtain le cinntiú go bhfuil daltaí s’againne ábalta spóirt difriúla a imirt. Is é Pádraig Mac Giolla Bhríde an comhordaitheoir spóirt sa scoile agus is féidir ceist a chuir air maidir le cúrsaí spóirt.

Tá daltaí agus múinteoirí na scoile ag obair go dian dícheallach le tamall de bhlianta anuas áfach chun traidisiún bródúil bríomhar a fhorbairt maidir le cluichí Gaelacha agus tá torthaí na dea-oibre sin anois le sonrú.  Ar feadh na mblianta bhain foirne scoile gradaim Ghairmscoileanna Aontroma agus bhain siad leo roinnt corn i gcluichí ceannais Chúige Uladh.  Anois bíonn muid páirteach i gCraobh Choláistí Chúige Uladh. I mbliana cheana féin bhain foireann peile na gcailíní Craobh Uladh, tá foireann peile Bl. 12 i gcluiche leathcheannais Chorn Uladh agus tá an fhoireann camógaíochta i gcluiche ceannais Uladh.

Tá daltaí Choláiste Feirste ag gnóthachtáil na ngradam scothréalt Scoileanna Uladh fosta – an onóir spóirt is airde sa Chúige.  Fuair Niall Mac Cionnaith an gradam don iomáint agus imríonn sé don chontae anois.  Arú anuraidh fuair Dubhaltach Mac Aoidh-Baicéir an gradam don iomáint agus anuraidh fuair Peter Mac Cailín an onóir chéanna – an bheirt acu ar an ollscoil anois.  Is léiriú iad na scothréalta seo ar an díograis agus ar an ardchaighdeán spóirt i gColáiste Feirste.

Áiseanna nua spóirt

Táimid thar a bheith bródúil leis na scoth-áiseanna úrnua spóirt atá againn anois ar Choláiste Feirste. Tá athbheochan iomlán déanta ar sheansuíomh Shólann Ard na bhFeá agus anois tá hallaí gleacaíochta, seomraí traenála agus seomraí feistis ann.  Taobh amuigh tá láthair ilspóirt 3G agus páirc imeartha CLG fosta atá inchurtha le páirc imeartha ar bith in Éirinn.  Sa bhreis air sin, tógadh foirgneamh Liathróid Láimhe den scoth arú anuraidh. Ó bhí mí Mheán Fómhair ann tá an tionscadal tógala seo ag soláthar deiseanna iontacha spórt dar ndaltaí, an Cheathrú Ghaeltachta agus an pobal áitiúil

Tá Coláiste Feirste tiomanta le deiseanna a sholáthar dár ndaltaí barrfheabhas a bhaint amach sa spórt.  Tá an fhís, na háiseanna, an fhoireann agus an saineolas againn na deiseanna spóirt seo a úsáid le sláinte agus folláin ár bpobal scoile iomláin a chur chun cinn.

Sport at Coláiste Feirste

Coláiste Feirste places a high emphasis on sport and physical education.  We maximise opportunities for personal development through PE classes and through the sports’ and clubs’ programme after school, for example through Extended Schools.

PE is a compulsory subject in the school. PE can also be chosen as a subject at GCSE in which pupils study balanced lifestyles and individual health, both physical, mental and social.  At post16 pupils can study BTEC Sport and then go on to study Sports’ Science at university.

There are many extra-curricular activities available for every student after school at Coláiste feirste. We have teams at every age group for Gaelic Football, Hurling, Ladies Football, Camogie and Soccer. We also provide Handball and Athletics for every student.  There is training after school, every day of the week to ensure our students have the chance to play different sports. Patrick Mc Bride is the sports coordinator in the school and you can speak to him regarding sport affairs in the school.

Students and staff have been working tirelessly over the last number of years to establish and develop a tradition of Gaelic games within the school with considerable success.  For many years we have been winning Ulster titles in the Ulster Schools Competitions, such as the Mallon Cup in Gaelic football and the McFaul Cup (three times!).  In 2018 our Year 10 Girl Gaelic Football team were crowned Ulster Champions, our Year 12 football team has reached an Ulster Colleges Semi Final and the school is in a Camogie Under 16 Ulster Final.

Coláiste Feirste pupils have also been achieving Ulster Schools’ All-Star Awards – the highest sporting honour in the province.  Niall Mac Cionnaith was awarded an All-Star in recent years and is now playing County Hurling.  In 2016 Dubhaltach Mac Aoidh-Baicéir gained an All-Star Award in Hurling and Peter Mac Cailín gained the same award in 2017 – both boys are now in university.  These All-Stars are yet more evidence of the commitment and high standards in sport in Coláiste Feirste.

New Sports Facilities

The school this year is celebrating with pride the opening of our new state-of-the-art sports facilities. Work has been completed on the exciting Spórtlann development which is now in full operation.  The development consists of an ultra-modern sports’ complex with sports’ halls, gyms and changing facilities.  Outside we have a new 3G multi-sports area and a full size GAA pitch on a par with the best in Ireland.  There is also an excellent recently finished Handball complex on the site. As a school community we are extremely proud of this project which offers wonderful opportunities both to our pupils, the Gaeltacht Quarter and the local community.

Coláiste Feirste is committed to providing all our pupils with opportunities to excel in sport. We have the vision, the facilities, the staff and expertise to utilise sporting opportunities to promote the health and well-being of our entire school community.
