An Nead is the Autism Specific Classroom based in Coláiste Feirste that is funded by the EA.  The Nead offers a nurturing, inclusive and stimulating learning environment for up to eight pupils with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder.  The room has one full-time teacher and two classroom assistants who are highly experienced and skilled.  Both teacher and classroom assistants are committed to ongoing professional development and have completed a variety of training courses in a range of areas including ASD, behavioural support, anxiety management, attachment disorder, life skills, nurture and ADHD.

The Nead takes a holistic approach to teaching and learning.  Each child is accepted as an individual and learning and support is planned for on an individual basis.  The children are taught through a bespoke curriculum that is pupil-led and often uses the child’s special interest as a means of engaging and stimulating the pupil.  We aim to develop a positive self-identity within each pupil whilst equipping them with the skills they will need to cope with day-to-day life.  Our primary priority in An Nead is to foster a sense of well-being and a sense of pride and achievement.  We aim to nurture the children providing them with love, care and attention, as well facilitating their acceptance of who they are.
